SUMMARY:
The Engineering Development Specialist II is responsible for providing technical assistance in de! signing and developing products from initial concept through first production runs with little or no supervision

Provides technical support to the sales, marketing and manufacturing efforts of the division.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

include the following.

Any or all of these duties may be required as needed for the project teams.

Other duties may be assigned.

1.

Consults with the marketing staff, sponsoring surgeons, and manufacturing staff, as required, facilitating developing state of the art implant and instrumentation designs.

2.

Acts as a consultant on the design of special implants and or instrumentation.

3.

Prepares design drawings/models and/or prepares and or reviews final drawings and models.

4.

Coordinates and provides technical assistance in the production of prototypes.

5.

Initiates, performs as needed, and reviews i! n-house mechanical product (implant and/or instrument) testing! in support of product design, regulatory submissions, manufacturing, quality, and sales support.

6.

Initiates, performs (non-surgical), and reviews surgical or cadaveric product testing in support of product design and sales support.

7.

Provides technical support for manufacturing, quality, marketing and sales, as directed.

8.

Travels, as required, for professional meetings, surgeon design meetings and in association with product development or technical support activities.

9.

Prepares and updates Project Schedules and may act as co-leader for programs as developed per the Strategic Product Definition Process.

10.

Works with the in-house legal department, outside legal consultants, and Government Patent Officials, as required, on patent searches, patent infringements, and patent applications.

11.

May Coordinate and review outside or independent laboratory testing on ! S&N products or competitive products.

12.

May Performs analyses and provides opinions to the legal department with regard to patent issues.

13.

May prepares technical documents, training programs, and technical presentations for customers or the sales force.

14.

Provides surgeons training through technical presentations, sawbones demonstrations, Cadaver Training and VIP tours, etc.

15.

Provides technical support the vendors from initial design, quotes, tooling, first-article inspection, production, to final inspection in support of product development activities.

For Internal and External Responsibilities:
Establishes relationships with key customers, researchers and vendors to conduct product development activities.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Ø

Two year technical degree plus mi! nimum 12 years relevant technical experience preferred or 14 years of relevant technical experience.

Ø

Professional Development will be continued through training, courses, seminars, conferences, and networking/mentoring.

Ø

Knowledgeable of orthopaedics and total joint design and design principals

Ø

Has a good understanding of manufacturing

and manufacturing methods

Ø

Has completed at least 4 projects that has had significant impact to Smith-Nephew Inc, either financially and or market position

COMPUTER SKILLS:
Ø

Basic PC skills and knowledge of MS Office applications including Word and Excel.

Ø

Modeling and Drafting CAD ability, including working knowledge of geometric tolerancing.

Ø

Experience using Unigraphics CAD or an equalivant CAD system.

Ø

Demonstrated ability of drafting, to fully dimension print! s

Ø

Demonstrated ability to perform free form modeli! ng

Ø

Demonstrated capability to utilize parametric modeling

Ø

Demonstrated ability to utilize SNO’s Matrix System and or PDM system

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyzes, and interprets common scientific and technical information, and financial reports.

Demonstrated ability to interpret patents, and identify limitations of the prior art.

Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
