Research Assistant I

Location: Nashville Tennessee

Description: Vanderbilt University is hiring Research Assistant I right now, this vacancy will be placed in Tennessee. The Ihrie lab is seeking a full-time research assistant to assist in laboratory experiments studying stem cells in the adult brain and brain tumors. Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent, ! preferably in a scientific discipline. Prior experience in research laboratory work is preferred.

Job responsibilities will include ordering supplies, maintaining laboratory reagents and purchasing records, and assisting the PI and laboratory members with experiments.Applicants should have excellent time management skills, solid written and oral communication skills, and references that can attest to their reliability, trustworthiness, and ability to work independently. Expertise in molecular biology, immunohistochemical staining, microscopy, microdissection, virus preparation and titration, stereotaxic surgery, or animal work would also be considered assets. Prior experience in managing teams (e.g. running student organizations or similar groups) is also desirable but not required. Successful candidates may be included as authors in research publications and will have the opportunity to develop independent research projects upon satisfactory initial performance re! views.

Characteristics of a successful applicant:

  • Reliable and trustworthy (will have to manage controlled substance and narcotics inventories)
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Good writing and oral communication skills
  • Experience with molecular biology (DNA/RNA and vector cloning) or flow cytometry a plus
  • Must be comfortable working with animals; does not need experience in this area
  • Experience working with others (e.g. running student organizations) a plus
Anticipated job responsibilities:
  • 25% ordering, record keeping and lab maintenance
  • 25% training and orienting new lab members
  • 50% experiments and benchwork
Additional Information:
This is a full-time position.

Salary is dependent upon years of education and experience.
