DUTIES:
Major Duties:
Employee is assigned to provide care for an adult/geriatric patient population, ranging from the critically/acutely ill patient to the chronic! ally/terminally ill long-term patient. The incumbent is able to provide comprehensive nursing care for patients during the day, evening and night tours of duty. The includes not only the delivery of personal care, but also observing, reporting and recording in the clinical record pertinent information relative to patient care. Use of sound judgment in emergency situations. Adjusting care according to identified patient needs and changing situations. Performs and/or assists in diagnostics studies. Assist or tech patients selected treatment procedures. Works with maximal initiative and minimal supervision. Performs personal hygiene to patients including shower, tub or bed bath. Provides nail, hair and oral care with suction or oral cavity if necessary. Assist with normal bladder and bowel elimination and encourages self-hygiene within patients ability and potential. Changes.make hospital beds including specialized beds. Maintains a neat and clean patient environment by proper! ly storing personal belongings and supplies, wiping up spills and dispo! sing of trash. Performs range of motion activities, positions patients and performs preventive skin care as directed by the nurse. Ambulant patients. Accompanies patients to selected areas for diagnostic and therapeutic treatments. Effective communication will be maintained with all levels of hospital staff, patient, families and visitors. Maintains and encourages rapport with patients, families, co-worker, visitors and volunteers. Provides input into unit goals and staff development needs and assist in orientation of newer employees.
Work Schedule:
Rotating tours including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
This position requires six months of general clinical exper! ience as well as six months of specialized Nursing Assistant experience at the GS-3 level or equivalent.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
The experience in nonprofessional nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other medical nursing, or patient care facility or in such work as that of a home health aide where the following duties were performed:
- Providing personal nursing care such as providing pre and post operative care
- Support duties for diagnostic and technical treatment procedures; such as setting up and operating special medical equipment and apparatus
- Caring for mentally ill patients, including observing, recording and reporting changes in their behavior and providing reassurance and encouragement
- Assisting surgeons and registered nurses in operating room activities, including passing instruments, maintaining sterile conditions, and draping and positioning patients.
EDUCATION:
Successful completion of a 2-year degree p! rogram in an accredited community college, junior college, or college or university in practical nursing or in a field of study appropriate to the specialization of the position, such as education in a program for a psychology, psychiatric, or operating room technician.
PREFERRED BACKGROUND OR EXPERIENCE:
Certified Nursing Assistant is preferred but not required.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave:
Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
