Assist orthopaedic surgeons and residents in the provision of safe and effective treatment of orthopaedic injuries. To provide supervision, mentoring and training to Orthopaedic Cast Technologists.

Key Functions and Expected Performances:
Assist orthopaedic surgeons and residents with preventing or correcting disorders of the locomotor structures of the body.

Apply, adjust, and remove cast per physician's order; inform physician of any complications. Take necessary precautions to protect fractures and surgical repairs during cast/splint changes.

Assist in assembling traction apparatus according to physician's order

Fit strapping and splints according to physician's order

Assess skin condition, wounds, and incisions under cast, splint or orthopaedic appliance. Inform physician of any complications.

Assess problem traction or external appliance conditions and make corrective modifications informing physician of any complications.

Maintain cleanliness of cast room area and equipment

Keep cast rooms stocked with needed supplies on daily basis

Clean equipment, floors and counters on daily basis

Facilitate compliance with JCAHO and VUMC guidelines at all times

Clean surfaces and change linens between each patient during clinic operating hours.

Assist in the education/training of Medical Students, Residents and Ortho Cast Techs.

Conduct training presentation on proper techniques of splinting and casting.

Develop and update orientation materials for new tech employees.

Conduct periodic in-services with tech and nursing staff about casting/splinting/external fixator subjects

Serve as a role model and mentor to new Ortho Cast Tech employees during their orientation period and beyond.

Supervise day to day operations in the cast room(s) and be responsible for daily staffing.

Work with manager to cover absences and redistribute staff as needed.

Provide performance feedback to cast tech employees in orientation.

Assist manager in preparing and completing performance evaluations on Ortho Cast Techs.

Manage inventory of medical supplies for the Orthopaedic Clinic

Keep accurate inventory of all medical supplies, ordering additional supplies when necessary.

Maintain order and neatness of supply room(s) at all times

Work with manager and Purchasing Department to research new products and evaluate all materials for cost effectiveness.

Maintain required number of continuing education units each year

Attend seminars/in-services applicable to Orthopaedics and/or casting and splinting

Prepare in-services for tech and nursing staff on cast-related subjects

Monitor research and new methods and materials to incorporate into best practice for the Orthopaedic Clinic.

Basic Qualifications

Job requires High school graduate or GED and

7 years of experience or the equivalent.
