The West Clinic’s clinical research program is internationally renowned. Department of Surgery The Department of Surgery has seven divisions: General/Minimally Invasive, Cardiothoracic, Surgical Oncology Peripheral Vascular, Pediatric Surgery, Transplantation, and Trauma/Surgical Critical Care. There are 40 general surgery residents, and fellowship/residencies in all of the other divisions. The training programs are committed to providing trainees with unique clinical experiences and educational opportunities that will prepare them to pursue any area of surgery. UT / Methodist LeBonheur /West Clinic Cancer Center In January, 2012, The West Clinic, Methodist Healthcare, and the University of Tennessee Health Science center joined forces to create a comprehensive, cancer center for the benefit of patients throughout the Mid-South. Our shared vision is: ¡ To create a world-class leader in oncology research and cancer care ¡ To directly enhance the lives of cancer patients across the Mid-South area, the state of Tennessee and nationally through comprehensive, compassionate care, community outreach and collaborative efforts with community and academic physicians ¡ To promote the understanding and treatment of cancer through innovative training programs, translational research and clinical discovery Funding for this initiative has resulted in the initiation of several new services and programs including: a new comprehensive, multidisciplinary breast center; recruiting new medical and surgical oncologists to provide leadership for multidisciplinary care; and expanding clinical navigator and survivorship services. We have also begun development of a translational medicine department with expansion of the phase I clinical program and the bone marrow/stem cell transplant program. The cancer center will be involved in rapid learning initiatives in oncology and will leverage the assets of the university to promote population health and reduction of disparities for cancer care in our region. In partnership with St Jude Children’s Research Hospital the new program is a main member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) with our physicians populating the guideline panels. An active medical oncology fellowship program has expanded and plans are underway to initiate surgical and breast oncology fellowships.
