 Job Description
The objective of the Meter Reader is to determine each customer"s consumption of water, control meter operation by opening and sealing meters, monitor and maintain conditions of meter connections and to ensure customers satisfaction by responding to questions in a prompt courteous manner. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

Reading numbers on water meters and recording usage or gathering consumption information electronically where applicable.
Making recommendations about meters needing to be repaired or replaced.
Responding to work orders; rereading meters upon customer request.
Providing information to other City departments.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Must be able to work an "on-call" duty schedule, as assigned or in severe weather conditions when needed.

Required Licenses or Certifications:
Texas driver"s license and acceptable driving record.

Required Skill in:
Operating a variety of equipment including hand-tools, chain saws, mowers, weed eaters, etc.
Safety policies, procedures, and practices.
Following written and verbal instructions.
Maintaining a professional manner when interacting with City employees and the public.
Reading and interpreting maintenance and equipment manuals.
Reading, comprehension, retaining and applying City and State policies and legislation, i.e. City ordinances, codes, policy and procedures manuals, MSDS sheets, safety manuals, traffic signs, warning labels, etc.

Reasoning Abilities:
Ability to respond to complaints and grievances posed by the public.
Ability to define problems and deal with a variety of situations.
Ability to think quickly, maintain self-control and adapt to stressful situations.
Ability to use good judgement and effectively problem-solve.
LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to communicate effectively with other members of the staff, supervisor, and the public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate basic mathematical calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).

Physical Demands:
The duties of this job may include physical activities such as balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing/listening, seeing/observing, bending/twisting and performing repetitive motions.
Job requires lifting of heavy objects weighing approximately 50 to 100 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distant and peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Outside environment during all kinds of weather events.
Repetitive activities (performance of same physically demanding activity).
Time pressure (frequent rush jobs, urgent deadlines, etc.).
