Department/Unit Summary
The Pediatric Operating is composed of 16 operating rooms with additional Cath Lab, GI, and dental procedural suites. The environment is fast paced, with exciting new technology being employed on a regular basis. The department services a wide variety of specialties, including robotics, neurosurgery, neuro interventional, spine, orthopedic, urology, ophthalmology, ENT and plastic surgery. Our average case load is 80 per day, with an annual volume of 17,000 cases. We offer comprehensive service to meet the needs of the community with specialty programs such as the complex coordination of care. This program coordinates the specialties, so that children have 1 anesthetic for multiple procedures, rather than having separate anesthetics for procedures with each individual specialty.
The Operating Room leadership team is comprised of 2 managers. One manager leads the cardiac surgical team, and the other manager leads the other specialties within the department. Day to day operations are overseen by our CSL (clinical staff leader) team. These leaders work alo ngside the staff to conduct the operational needs of the unit. Staff directly report to the clinical staff leaders in the unit.
The department has an active unit board that is led by 3 staff co-chairs. The unit board partners with management as part of the VUMC shared governance structure to work on enhancements to quality provided by the department and to work life.
The Operating Room is involved in global mission work and conducts two trips annually. Full time staff are invited to participate in this work after completing one year of full time service.
