The LPN in the scrub role under the supervision of physicians/RN, assists surgeons before, during and after the surgery. The LPN in! the circulating role is also responsible for their assigned room, turnaround time, staff direction, and other duties as assigned. Provides comprehensive operating room nursing care to patients in an assigned operating room and assist the physician as required. Operates various mechanical devices or instruments. Meets physical and comfort needs of patients. Reports emergencies and administers emergency treatment.

Key Functions and Expected Performances:
Planning & Managing Care

Addresses patient safety needs (ex: initiates timeout before procedure for pt id, site, side, operation of equipment, electrical, laser and radiation safety, care of anesthetized pt, positioning, skin care). May be evidenced by absence of safety problems.

Applies age-specific/cultural considerations to care of patient.

Identifies and takes action to decrease costs of patient care.

Identifies and takes action on issues that would negativel! y impact patient flow.

Addresses breaks in asepsis an! d sterile technique as outlined in AORN standards

Practice adheres to all hospital and Perioperative policies and procedures.

Anticipates patient case specific needs based on knowledge of procedure and pathophysiology regarding patient procedure.

Leaves work area clean, stocked and in order.

Understands implication of evidence based learning on current clinical practice by applying applicable policies and guidelines.

Manages complex clinical situations (ex: recognizes early sign of pt deterioration and prepares for anticipated intervention).

Delegates to staff appropriately, with consideration for other team members' workload.

Manages complex clinical situations including system/operational barriers. Takes on additional clinical responsibilities and/or assists others (ex: learns how to function in multiple roles: cross services, scrub-in on cases).

CONTINUUM OF CARE PLANNING

Anticipates ! and reports/plans for transfer to next level of care (SBAR). Ex: Notifies PACU/receiving unit of impending transfer and anticipated needs.

Uses internal and external referrals and resources that support pt/families through continuum of care.

Anticipates and reports change in plan for next level or care in unexpected, changing and complex situations. (ex: when patient condition changes and requires a change in transfer area.)

Problem Solving

Identifies and takes action to resolve patient safety related problems and other clinical issues.

Actively participates in team/group problem solving.

Follows appropriate chain of command when problem solving.

Positively supports change.

Identifies and takes action to resolve system (operational/workarounds) problems.

Communication and Collaboration

Personal behavior positively influences environment and others (may include attendance, tardiness, te! am support).

Hand-over is clear, concise and complete, includi! ng family status when applicable.

Reviews patient record as part of overall care.

Participates in multidisciplinary efforts to form plan of care/meet patient's needs.

Effectively communicates and collaborates with staff and other Health Care Team members.

Provides adequate and objective feedback in a professional and respectful manner while maintaining confidentiality.

Complete assigned evaluation tools within designated timeframe (ex. End of orientation, self report, and peer feedback).

Communicates positively and constructively in stressful situations.

Participates directly in and/or supports orientation of new staff.

Gives and receives peer feedback in a respectful and professional manner on a day-to-day basis.

CONTINUOUS LEARNING

Provide to manager evidence of self- educational activities within timeframe designated by manager. *Total # of contact hours, courses taken, articles rea! d/hours spent in self education. LPN 2 0hrs. = 1; 20 hrs = 5

Participates in quality improvement initiatives.

Basic Qualifications

Job requires Graduate of an accredited LPN/Surgical Tech program and 1 years of experience preferred.
