Responsibilities:
The Assistant Nurse Manager is responsible for direction and coordination of all operations within the critical care unit. This direction and coordination is done by collaborating with the nurse manager and acting as the nurse manager in their absence. The Assistant Nurse Manager will collaborate with other management team members within the unit and hospital to ensure the quality of patient care services provided in the unit.

The Assistant Nurse Manager (RN):
Assumes responsibility for daily operations of the unit to include scheduling, staffing, evaluation of staff performance and provides constructive criticism/counseling to staff as needed in a professional manner.

Participates in staff selection for the unit in collaboration with other members of leadership team.

Functions as a clinical expert in critical car! e for staff members and assists in necessary education of individual members of the nursing staff.

Assumes responsibility for the overall quality of nursing care provided on the unit.

Makes decisions regarding activities within these areas based on Administrative Operational Standards, Nursing Administrative Standards, Human Resource Standards, and Standards of Care for the unit, in collaboration with other members of the management team.

General Essential Functions:
Demonstrates sound knowledge base in nursing practice and its clinical application to the patient population served in the unit, including the operation of equipment, and policy and procedures used in the delivery of patient care in the unit.

Supervises personnel providing direct patient care, with delegation of activities based on patient care needs and competencies of available patient care staff.

Provides direct and ongoing supervision of staff with reg! ard to conflict resolution and personnel policy compliance, including i! nput and/or completion of performance evaluations and disciplinary actions.

Participates in interviewing new staff and assists with hiring decision and process.

Assumes responsibility for resolving and/or channeling employee grievances according to appropriate procedures.

Teaches, supervises and serves as a resource for staff, assists with clinical procedures as needed.

Assesses need for and assists in implementation of staff development programs to enhance professional growth of personnel.

Facilitates and/or participates in ongoing performance improvement activities which correlate to the Hospital-wide Performance Improvement Program with involvement of all levels of staff on designated shift as appropriate.

Self-assigns patients and functions as necessary based on patient needs and available resources on unit.

Communicates directly with the director/manager on unit about staff performance issues needing attent! ion as well as participates in the counseling process

Maintains awareness of current developments and trends in nursing practice.

Rounds on patients during the shift.

Displays initiative to see processes through to completion and offers assistance without being asked.

Consistently demonstrates behavior which reflects that working as a team is more important than self-interest.

Demonstrates interpersonal competencies such as problem-solving, negotiation, and conflict management to improve team work.

Consistently maintains professional level of conduct.

Facilitates communication with patients, physicians, guests, and co-workers as appropriate to position. Protects confidentiality of patients/coworkers, respecting their dignity, privacy, and differences.

Time will be divided between direct nursing care and administrative responsibilities

Creates staffing schedules and ensures that staff members ad! here to schedule.

Assists Manager in communicating to staff ch! anges in practice/policy as well as new initiatives.

Ensures nursing documentation on patient charts is complete and accurate.

Supports the facility's Standards of Performance and ICARE values

Promotes a cooperative, healthy environment with communication to staff and physicians.

Maintains knowledge and follows all CMS and JCAHO requirements.

Successfully complete critical care unit specific competencies yearly.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree is preferred

Current licensure by Tennessee Board of Nursing or compact licensure state

Current BLS and ACLS certifications

ACLS EP preferred

Three to five years nursing experience required

One to two years supervisory/managerial experience required

Computer skills required

Specialty certification preferred
